Climate of Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein has a temperate, alpine climate with warm and wet summers and mild winters. The geographic latitude, vertical topography, position of the country relative to the sea and the south wind (Föhn) are the factors that determine the climate of Liechtenstein.

Since Liechtenstein is a small-sized country, the geographic latitude differential becomes unimportant. The vertical segmentation of the country into the Rhine Valley and the mountainous part rising from the valley is, however, significant. Therefore, the climate of Liechtenstein is continental.

The country experiences cold and cloudy winters are while the summers are warm with occasional spells of rainfall. Rainfalls and snowfalls are quite common and frequent during winters and humidity during summers. In the winter, temperatures seldom drop below minus 1C, while the average temperatures in the summer oscillate between 20 and 28°C. Annual precipitation measures between around 900 and 1200 millimeters while in the mountainous regions, precipitation can reach up to 1900 millimeters.

Although, the tourists can visit Liechtenstein any time of the year due to its mild weather conditions, yet the best season will be from May to September. During this period, the weather is warm and pleasant. Some lightweight clothing is perfect for summer while warmer heavyweights are worn in winter. Waterproofs such as raincoats and umbrellas are required throughout the year.
