Costa Ricans divide the year into two periods, namely, Verano as summer and Invierno as winter. The verano season is experienced from December to May when it is not so wet. Invierno is the period from May to November, when it rains constantly. Temperature depends on the elevation than location with a mean of around 72 degrees in the Central Valley, 82 degrees on the Atlantic coast and 89 degrees on the Pacific coast.
Annual rainfall averages 100 inches nationwide with some mountainous regions getting as much as 25 feet on exposed eastern slopes. The location that receives the most rain is the Caribbean (northeast) slopes of the Central Cordillera mountains, with an annual rainfall of over 5,000 mm. Humidity is also higher on the Caribbean side than on the Pacific side.

The best time to visit Costa Rica is during the months December to April. During this period, only one or two rainy days per month can be experienced in most of the areas. This is also the busiest time of year, especially during Christmas and Spring season. |

The tourists who are interested in watching the sea turtles may travel between mid-March and mid-August. One can see the young hatchlings appearing from June through August.
