Cities of Luxembourg

The towns and cities of Luxembourg are well-planned and strikingly clean. Most of them are centuries old and house town squares and monuments dating back to the middle ages.

Although modern, these urban centres are surprisingly devoid of the clutter and disorderliness that one would associate with metropolitan cities like New York or Paris.

Echternach
This early center of European Christianity was heavily damaged during World War II, but today it has been completely built and restored to its previous glory and charm. Its narrow medieval streets, ancient ramparts and old patrician houses still impart a nostalgic feeling of the era gone by. The scenic Gorge du Loup, the Museum of Prehistory, a Benedictine abbey (today a school) and a 7th-century basilica with beautifully painted vaults and frescoes and the white marble sarcophagus are among the town's highlights. The town is also known for its centuries-old Whittuesday dancing procession in May or June which attracts many pilgrims and visitors. The city is situated 20 mi/32 km northeast of Luxembourg City.

Vianden
Located on the Our River, Vianden is situated 23 mi/37 km northeast of Luxembourg City. This town is the site of a wonderful medieval castle with a nice display of antique weaponry & armour and furniture & tapestries. Vianden is also known for the Victor Hugo House and museum, a folklore museum and the scenic wooded hills where Hugo used to go for relaxation. Vianden merits at least a full day visit.

Beaufort
Beaufort is a tiny town in the country's Mullerthal (Little Switzerland) located 17 mi/27 km northeast of Luxembourg City. The region is surrounded by truly spectacular scenery. Beaufort itself has a ruined 12th-century castle, a more recent castle and a neo-Gothic church. Those who love the outdoors can spend several days on hiking or biking trails to exploring the forests, rivers, mountains and gorges of the region.
