Charming villages of Dominica

Soufriere & Scotts Head
In the far south are the villages of Soufrière and Scotts Head. At a short distance from the capital Roseau, a 25 minutes scenic drive along the south west coast brings you to Scott’s Head. Both are worth visiting for their setting on the sea with a hilly backdrop and brightly painted fishing boats pulled up on the shore.

The Bay of Soufriere and Scotts Head Marine Reserve offers opportunities for diving, snorkeling, sea-kayaking etc. The waters off the coast here are ideal for waterborne adventure. Kayaking can be enjoyed in the Soufriere bay, and Pointe Michel is ideal for fishing. Also, there are hot water springs along the shore in Soufriere, A mural depicting village life is can be seen in the Roman Catholic church on the coast and also to be seen are the ruins of an old lime factory in this village. In the Soufriere valley near this village are sulphur springs where a dip in the warm pool of water soothes the muscles.

Scotts Head is a pencil-like peninsula on the southern tip of the island overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The waters near the southwest coast, near Scotts Head, are a divers & snorkelers paradise. Hot springs are active along the shore like “champagne” named because of the volcanic activity generates champagne like bubbles that escape through underwater vents making the waters warm. Dangleben’s Pinnacles is home to stunning pinnacles, sea-life, and hard & soft corals. A 15 minutes hike brings you to the ruins of Fort Cashacrou on the tip of Scotts Head presenting a picturesque view across the bay & Martinique.

There are plenty of buses for Scotts Head that charge around EC$3. Ask around the fishing huts if you are hungry, and you will be directed to buildings where you can eat chicken pilau for EC$6 and watch dominoes being played. There is a friendly café, Sundowner, on the main road just across from the most active fishing area.
