| Fontein cave is located to the east of the village of Santa Cruz. There is a large chamber at the entrance, with natural pillars, and a 100 m tunnel leading off, halfway down which are Indian paintings. Despite the desolation of the area, there is a well near the caves with brackish water. Work has been completed to restore the Amerindian drawings in the cave, clean up the more recent graffiti and install a car park and picnic benches. The cave is open to visitors during daylight hours only. | ||
| Further along the coast are the Guadirikiri caves, two large chambers lit by sunlight, connected by passages and pillars, with a 100 m tunnel, for which you need a torch. Bats live in this cave system. The road around the coast here is very bumpy and dusty, being used by quarry trucks.A third cave, Huliba, is known as the Tunnel of Love. Again, no entry fee but helmets (US$2.50) and torches available. The walk through the tunnel takes 20-30 minutes with a 10-minute return walk overground. From here you can turn east again to drive up Jamanota, at 189 m the highest elevation on the island. |
