Attractions in and Around Girne

Girne Castle dates back to around 9th Century though the correct date has not been established. It was built by the Byzantines to defend Girne against Arab raids. The Lusignans and the Venetians have made subsequent additions to this castle.

The Girne Yacht Harbour here reflects an aura of the oriental Mediterranean. The marina is surrounded by old Venetian houses, restaurants and taverns and attracts several colourful fishing boats and yachts.

Bellapais is four miles to the east of Girne, near the village that was once home for Lawrence Durrell. The Bellapais Abbey is a grand Gothic monument structure dating back to 1205 and is among the best sites that the island has to offer. The name meaning "beautiful peace" has been derived from French.  It has also been called Abbey de la Pais or the Abbey of Peace. The citrus gardens here stretch out to the sea below and present magnificent views.

Panagia Chrysopolitissa is an 18th century church that has the finest collection of icons in Girne.

The Shipwreck Museum houses the remains of the oldest trading ship to be recovered from the sea. It sank in a storm around the year 300 BC, less than a mile off the coast of Girne. The ship has been raised from the sea, reassembled, and treated and then put on display. Also in the museum is the cargo carried by the ship on its last voyage, including 400 wine amphorae, 9,000 almonds, 29 millstones, 4 wooden spoons, 4 jars of oil, 4 salt pots, and 4 casks of alcohol.
