Scuba diving in Fijian waters

Most of the resorts have qualified PADI instructors to teach scuba diving to those who are new to it. The waters of Fiji offer spectacular sites of coral life just 20 meters under. The more adventurous can encounter the manta rays, dolphins, reef sharks, sea turtles, moray eels and even tuna. A diver can find black coral, soft coral, hard corals, walls, caves and prolific fish life here.

 

Picnic in a private beach

Most Fijian resorts are situated in idyllic islands full of bays and are perfect for a secluded picnic. The resorts can serve you delicious cuisine of your choice with lobster and wine and deposit you in your own private beach for a day of uninterrupted fun. Some beaches have bures or hammocks installed. You have to arrange the time for your pick up or radio them as they will not come back and disturb you.

 

Participate in a Kava Ceremony

Kava is Fiji’s national drink. Prepared from the ground powdered roots, this is like muddy water with slight peppery flavor. This is prepared in special wooden kava bowl and strained through a muslin cloth. Smaller bowls are passed around in circles. When accepting this you have to clap once before drinking and three times after drinking. You tongue will go numb and the bowl keeps rotating in your direction. This is a social pastime and a cultural tradition.

 

Taste a Lovo Feast

The Fijians prepare their food in a distinctive style. They wrap chicken, seafood, meats, potatoes, bananas and other vegetation in silver foil. They encase it in whole palm leaves and place in an underground oven. The food is cooked in its own juices and tastes great. Many of the resorts hold lovo feasts at least once a week and on special occasions.

 

Dance Meke

Locals dress entirely in national costume of flower leis, grass skirts and tapa cloth to perform the meke dance. The tapa cloth plays a significant role in rituals and celebrations. The men perform warrior dances while the women sing songs in their sweet melodic voices and illustrating by movements and gestures.

 

Attend a Fijian Wedding Ceremony

Witness the special Fijian weddings. Hours are spent on making beautiful floral leis, headpieces and adorning the wedding raft with red hibiscus. The guests also wear frangipani leis and it is a custom to hand over rice to throw at the newly wed couple as soon as the ceremony is over. The singing Choirs and flowing champagne make the ceremony a very special one.

 

Enjoy a midnight snorkel

The Fijian beaches are safe and the water is warm at night. On a full moon day you can literally see right down under the water of your toes. The amazing part is that the sulphurescence of the water which will make your skin glow in the dark.

 

Chopper tour of the island

The incredible ocean around Fiji is spectacular from the air. You can see the incredible reefs, the sandbanks, the leaping dolphins, even a whale. From the helicopter you are low enough to avoid the clouds and high enough to see the graduating blues and greens of the water as tiny atolls break it up. The coconut palms resemble pink flamingoes and the fish eggs in spawning season look like orange pollen scattered in the ocean.
