Acapulco is the largest and most spectacular tourist resort in the Mexican Pacific. |
Dubbed as the Pearl of the Pacific, it has stunning beaches, exuberant natural surroundings, wonderful climate, not to forget its romanticism with history and specially the legends of pirates.
During the viceroyalty, boats set off from Acapulco to explore the South Seas, and in 1566, it was inaugurated as a trade route with the Far East through the routes of the galleons of China and the Philippines. This trade attracted marauding pirates that repeatedly attacked the port. By 1616, so many galleons and mule trains had fallen prey to such infamous characters as Sir Francis Drake and Henry Morgan that the government decided to build a fort. It was called Fort San Diego, and today it is one of Acapulco's best historical attractions.
Set in gorgeous natural surroundings, Acapulco offers an enormous range of attractions and activities. It has a stunning bay, a sweeping scythe-stroke of yellow sand backed by the white towers of the high-rise hotels and, behind them, the green foothills of the Sierra. The bay blends seamlessly with major hotel complexes, superb restaurants and wonderful nightclubs.
The seaside city is also a backyard beach to residents of Mexico City (the national capital is just 250 mi/400 km away) and Guadalajara. As a result, Acapulco feels more authentically Mexican than do resorts such as Cancun or Los Cabos, which are tailored to vacationers from abroad.
Acapulco is located 326 km away from the Federal District along the Autopista del Sol, and 411 km away by the old federal highway no. 95. It also boasts an excellent international airport.
The more than twenty beaches offer ample opportunities for sports fishing, diving, water skiing and snorkeling. There are also several ecological areas that are ideal for picnics and horse riding, as well as golf courses and tennis courts.
Acapulco is a wonderful place for shopping in stores that combine luxury with comfort. It also boasts a variety of restaurants offering everything from regional to international cuisine. The port’s nightlife is intense and extremely diverse, offering something for every taste.
