Abuja- The Capital of Nigeria

Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria. It was constructed in 1980s after the decision of moving the capital from Lagos to Abuja was made. The capital was finally moved to Abuja in 1991. The estimated population of Abuja is 1,078,700.


The city is designed by Kenzo Tange, a renowned Japanese architect, along with his team of city planners at Kenzo Tange and Urtec Company. Shaped like a crescent, it was intended to reflect the will of the Muslim faithful, who sanctioned this design.

 

Abuja although is a new capital of but its history dates centuries back. Abuja was the Centre of the Nok culture during 500 BC- AD 200. It gained independence in 1960. Most countries moved their embassies to Abuja and maintain their larger former embassies as consulates in the commercial capital, Lagos.

 

There are many places to visit in Abuja, Including the Aso Rock, a 400-metre monolith left by water erosion, The Presidential Complex, National Assembly, and Supreme Court. Other sights include the Nigerian National Mosque and the National Ecumenical Centre cathedral. The city is served by the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, while Zuma Rock lies nearby.

 

Abjua City is one of the cities bidding for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
