Shopping around in Madagascar

Throughout the island, you will find a wide and wonderful variety of hand-made objects in wood, leather, horn, metal, stone, mineral, clay, cloth, feathers, and sections of the Zoma market in Antananarivo are devoted to Malagasy crafts. Prices are low and bargaining is common since there are not many tourists. 


When buying anything of significant value, ask the merchant to give you a "certificat de vente” i.e. a form describing the products sold and signed by the merchant, as this might be required by the customs officials while leaving the country. Exportation of handicrafts in commercial quantities and certain categories of objects require an authorization issued by the appropriate Ministry.
