Getting into Samoa

By Air

The airlines serving Faleolo are Polynesian Airlines, Air New Zealand, Samoa Air & Air Pacific. The Faleolo International Airport is the only international airport in Western Samoa. There is a departure tax of 20 Tala for adults and 10 Tala for children over the age of 5.

The Discover Samoa Pass offered by Polynesian Airlines for non residents is an excellent option if you wish to travel around Samoa by plane.

The airport of Fagali'I, five minutes from the centre of Apia, is served by Polynesian Airlines. There are daily flights from here to Maota airstrip in southeastern Savai'i. Mo'ata, located on the southern coast of Savai'i about 10 minutes drive from the wharf at Salealoga, this is the main airport on Savai'i. There are several flights a day from Fagali'i in Apia.

The airstrip of Asau is located on the north western coast of Savai'i. Savaii and Upolu are the biggest and most important islands in Samoa. Savaii has two airstrips at Maota and Asau, both are well-connected by regular internal flights. This is an excellent and very reasonably priced way to travel.

Other flight services include Air New Zealand, Air Pacific, Royal Tongan Airlines, and Samoa Air that connect Apia on the Upolu island to and around Samoa.

By Sea

The only port of entry for Western Samoa is Apia. If entering Samoa by boat you will need to be in possession of a Certificate of Clearance from your previous port of departure, five copies of a crew list and valid passports. If you wish to gain access to other harbours around the island you should contact the Prime Minister's Office, for details contact the Harbour Master. The are daily sailings between Mulifanua in Upolu to the Salelologa Wharf in Savai'i, a trip that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending upon the weather conditions.

Ferries
A regular passenger and vehicle ferry service operates between Upolu and Savaii. The trip takes 65 minutes.

If you are planning to go to Savaii with a car, advance booking is required. Reservations can be made at the Samoa Shipping Corporation office in Matautu Street. The price for the vehicle includes the driver and additional passengers are required to buy separate tickets.

Samoa Shipping Corporation, Lady Samoa & Lady Naomi Ferries, and Manono Island Boats provide inter-island travel for Samoa from Apia on Upolu Island. Lady Samoa & Lady Naomi Ferries operates between Upolu and American Samoa once a week.

The boats to Manono Island do not have timetables but can be arranged on site at Manono-Uta. Check with Samoa Shipping Corp for schedule of all ferry services.
