Astoria
Hotel Astoria is one of the grand old Viennese hotels; built in 1912 it still retains the outward charm of that era. It is located on the Kärnterstrasse between the Opera and St. Stephan's. The interior is warm and welcoming. Two of the floors have been renovated and have a retro and soft contemporary style whereas the other floors maintain their old-fashioned appeal. With a lobby that is as old-world Viennese as they come, this 19th-century landmark has a distinguished history dating back to 1872 (the Strauss family once resided in a hotel on the site; Friedrich Schlögl, one of the founding fathers of the Viennese literature tradition, began a literary and art salon in this hotel's reception rooms). Hotel Kugel
Hotel Kugel is over 100 years old; the grand exterior tells it was once one of the best places to stay in the city. Some rooms are really a nice surprise, with bright-yellow-and-white color schemes, modern canopied beds, nice throw rugs, and lots of grandly scaled windows adorned with elegant yellow curtains. Other rooms, however, are rather plain and modern with little charm. Since the prices are so gentle here, The Museums-Quartier and Kunsthistorisches are easily reachable by subway, tram, or five-minute walk.
