Kummer
With a lobby that is as old-world Viennese as they come, this 19th-century landmark has a distinguished history dating back to 1872 (the Strauss family once resided in a hotel on the site; Friedrich Schlögl, one of the founding fathers of the Viennese literature tradition, began a literary and art salon in this hotel's reception rooms). You enter and are caught up in a waltz of beveled glass, gilded globe-lanterns, colored marble trim, and painted boiserie, all surrounding a grand staircase atrium. Upstairs, each comfortably furnished room is different, and the ones facing the busy Mariahilferstrasse have soundproof windows.
Some rooms have an alcove sitting area; single rooms are very much on the bijou side. Yes, you are in the very heart of the shopping district, which means crowds and neon signs but the hotel is close to the Westbahnhof, major museums, and you may feel you've wandered onto a set for Die Fledermaus when you see that lobby.
