Cottage Colonies in Bermuda

These are typically Bermudian and feature a main club-house with dining room, lounge and bar. The cottage units are spread throughout landscaped grounds and offer privacy and luxury. Though most have kitchenettes for beverages or light snacks they are not self-catering units...

Ariel Sands Club & Cottages.  It gets its name from Shakespeare's Ariel, a spirit, in his drama "The Tempest." It has been completely renovated and given a new look. The property first opened on December 18, 1954. Before that, it was a farm. It has been owned by the Dill family in Bermuda for over 100 years.  One of the shareholders is film star Michael Douglas, whose Bermudian mother is Diana Dill Darrid and father is Kirk Douglas.

The family also owns the Brighton Hill Nursery across the street and up the hill to the right. Another owner was Laurence Dill, who died in late November 2000 at the age of 91. He lived in an historic private home, "Belhaven" in Devonshire, south east of Brighton Hill Nursery. He was an uncle of Michael Douglas. He was a talented composer and pianist. The property is on day time day bus route # 1. With pool, private beach, restaurant and tennis courts.

Bermuda Sailors' Home.  Both bedrooms units have 2 beds, no private bathrooms access to one. Limited to mariners who can prove they are crew members of any type of ship, including yachts. On a first come, first served basis. The Bermuda Sailor's Home first opened in the city of Hamilton in 1937 as Dickie Tucker's Sailors Home for seamen from ships of many nations. More than 9,000 sailors used the premises in that year alone. They have declined appreciably since then. The 1999 cost was $75 a night per person. There is a restaurant on the premises.

Richmond Road, Pembroke Parish, on outskirts of the City of Hamilton.

Cambridge Beaches. 81 rooms but 93 from the spring of 2001. The President and Chief Operating Officer is Michael Winfield, a former Bermuda Senator. An exclusive world-class resort located on its own 25 acre peninsula on the western tip of Bermuda. It has five small private beaches at King's Point, Mangrove Bay Terrace for informal meals and Tamarisk Room for formal dining restaurants and many more features. Modified American Plan (MAP) is offered guests. It is a US$ 60 or more one way taxi ride from or to the airport. Buses do not serve this property.

It got the Bermuda Government's Tourism Longtail Merit Award in July 2000. It will be closing in December 2000 until April 2001 for a US$ 8 million refit. This will demolish some existing guest accommodation and replace them with 18 new luxury suites, with living space of between 770 and 835 square feet. It will also increase the number of units from the present 81 to 93 and create new kitchens. The probability of tax breaks under the Hotel Concessions Act 2000 smoothed the way for the refit.
