History of Ajman, UAE

Ajman is the smallest of all 7 emirates of the UAE covering an area of only 260 sq km. The capital of the emirate is the Ajman city. It has a 16 km long stretch of silvery sand beach. The emirate is ruled by His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi. The Crown prince of the Emirate is Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi.

Located on the Persian Gulf, Masfut and Manama also comes under Ajman’s dominion. They are small inland enclaves and are rich in agricultural productivity. While Masfut is 110 km to the southeast of Ajman, Manama lies 60 km to the east.

Sheikh Rashid Bin Al Nuaimi signed the General Maritime Treaty with Britain on 8th January 1820. The treaty confirmed the protectorate status of Ajman to keep the Ottoman Turks out. Due to its important and strategic position en route to India, Ajman like its neighbors was recognized as a salute state.

On 2nd December 1971, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi joined the United Arab Emirates. A brush with the history of Ajman can be enjoyed at the large fort in the center, old watchtower and museum. The watchtower at the entrance of the city gives an impression that it is the guardian of the city.

Opened in 1981, Ajman Museum is housed in a beautiful 18th century fort, which was the ruler’s palace and office until 1970. The museum displays manuscripts, traditional weapons, archaeological artifacts and dioramas of traditional life.

Ajman is distinguished for possessing the largest ship building yards in the UAE. The craftsmen have continued to build the dhows and boats in the traditional techniques followed by their forefathers without even the blueprints. The dhow yard towards the north of Ajman Creek is the most active ship building yard in the entire country.

The majority of population of Ajman lives in the capital city. It is a perfect choice for the expatriate population who are working in Dubai or Sharjah. This is mostly due to affordable housing rents compared to the two emirates. The city is developing like its neighboring emirates as several shopping malls, hotels and commercial establishments are coming up.
