Historical sites of Liechtenstein

With a colourful past and culture, Liechtenstein abounds in sites of historical importance. Here is a list of some of the most facinating and monumental buildings and places in Liechtenstein.

Gutenberg Castle
Gutenberg Castle dates back to the 13th century. After having been private property for many years, the state of Liechtenstein purchased the castle in 2002. In summer, various cultural events such as “Kultur-Treff Burg Gutenberg” take place in the courtyard. The grounds of the castle are off limits except during official functions.

The Ruins of Schellenberg
Schellenberg has been populated since 3,000 BC. This is due to its safe location high above the Rhine valley. The ruins of the castle date back to the 13th century and were owned by lords of southern Germany who gave the village and the lands of Schellenberg (today “Liechtensteiner Unterland”) their name. Eschnerberg historical path leads visitors past the ruins. Information panels along the path provide an overview of the settlement history of the neighboring villages.

Government Building (Regierungsgebäude)
Completed in 1905, the government building or Regierungsgebäude is the seat of the government and parliament. The government building and St. Florin’s Church are landmarks of this part of Vaduz. The government building and “Verweserhaus” are living proof of the fact that Vaduz has been the capital since 1342 and the residence of the lords of the old lands of Vaduz and of the Principality of Liechtenstein.<
