Historic Landmarks of Guernsey

Guernsey is full of historic land marks. Visitors to the island will find a fascinating variety from early Neolithic works, to castles, forts and watch towers, the most recent built by the Germans during the Occupation from 1940 to 1945. The States of Guernsey has restored many of the historic land marks.

Specimens of The Dolmens or tombs of prehistoric tribes can be viewed all over the island. Of particular interest among these are the Déhus Dolmen, near the yacht marina in the Vale, La Varde Dolmen at the Pembroke end of L'Ancresse Common, Le Creux Faies at L'Erée, and La Catioroc, on a mound overlooking Perelle Bay that is believed to a former meeting place for Guernsey witches. The Ivy Castle is located near Le Bouet and was built prior to the Norman conquest of England. The Vale Castle located at St Sampson, had a Russian garrison stationed in around 1805.

Remnants of fortifications at Fort Pezerie, Fort Grey that houses the Fort Grey Shipwreck Museum, Fort Saumerez and Fort George can also be found on the island along with Martello Towers that are also scattered all over the island.

Remnants of few Nazi fortifications mostly located on cliffs can also be found on the island. The underground hospital at St Andrews is the largest German structure in the Channel Islands. The Occupation Museum at the Forest includes several relics and reflects life during the German occupation.

The cliffs around the island are ideal for walks and strolls. These promenades lead to many bays that are suitable for bathing and are easily accessible from the cliffs. The Water Lanes leading to the shore particularly at Moulin Huet and Petit Bôt are worth a visit. The Little Chapel at Les Vauxbelets is the smallest church in the world, with just enough space for a priest and a congregation of two.
