Climate of China

chin-clChina which occupies a vast area of land is generally dominated by dry seasons and wet monsoons. Due to its extensive territory and complex terrain, its climate differs from one region to another.

It has a climate characterized with bitter cold in winter and unbearable heat in summer. The southeastern region, part of Nanling Mountains receives plenty of rain with high temperature all the year round, while the central part of Yangtze River and Huaihe river valleys are dominated by four distinctive seasons.

The southwest region of low latitudes with high lands features vertical seasonal zones with temperatures differing from a valley to a mountain peak. In Northeast China, though summer is short, there is much sunshine, while winter is long and cold. The Northwestern part is cold in winter and hot in summer with scare rainfall.

Due to its diverse nature of climate in different regions, it is difficult to find an ideal time to visit China. But you can refer to the following climatic description of different regions.

North
During December and March, Beijing may be very cold with temperature of -20oC at night, while in the summer between May and August, it can hit 38C (100F), coinciding with the rainy season for the city. Spring and the autumn seasons are considered as the best time to visit the north of China when the daytime temperatures fluctuate from 20oC to 30oC and drop a lot at night with the annual rainfall of 6370cm.

Central
The city of Wuhan, Chongqing and Nanjing which stand on the river of Yangtze are very hot from April to October while in the winter it can be as cold as Beijing with spring and autumn are probably the best time for visit. Here, the average rainfall is around 76 cm (30 inches) per year.

South
In the South near Guangzhou, temperatures can rise up to 38oC between July and September, while winters are short, between January and March with less cold wave unlike the north. Autumn and spring are the best times for visit with day temperatures from 20oC to 25oC. Here, the annual rainfall is around 76 cm (30 inches).

Northwest
The Northwest part of China with the desert regions is hot, dry and sunny in summer and Turphan referred to as the 'hottest place in China' can hit maximum of around 47oC while in the winter the region is as severely cold as the rest of northern China with -10oC temperature. Temperatures in Turphan during winter are hardly favorable for human existence.

Being one of the inhospitable places for human existence, Tibet has a freezing cold temperature in winter though it is cool in summer. Lhasa, the mildest city in Tibet, may exceed 29oC in summer, while dropping to -16oC in winter. For its strong and intense sun radiation, Tibet is known as Sunlight City. To visit this place, April to October is the best time while May, June and September is the tourist season in east Tibet. If you are visiting south Tibet, then May to October is the best time during which you can also see some of the great festivals held.
