Visitors to the island are awed by the beauty of the surroundings as well as the dignified demeanor of its inhabitants. Bermuda is a mix between island informality and British reserve. Here are some tips to make your trip go smoothly. |
Clothing
There is one rule around the island – dress conservatively. Nudity is not allowed on the beaches and it is forbidden to appear in public without a shirt or in a bikini top. Bathing suits, abbreviated tops, and short shorts are not acceptable except at beaches and pools. Casual sports wear is allowed in restaurants during lunch time, but evening dining requires formal dress.
Currency
The currency is Bermuda Dollar (BD$), which is equal to the US Dollar. Most shops and restaurants will accept the US Dollar but not other currencies. It is advisable to exchange your existing currency upon arrival. All major credit cards are accepted everywhere and can be used to make cash advances at ATMS. Personal checks drawn on US banks are accepted in some places.
Shopping
All stores are open from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at Bermuda’s popular Royal Naval Dockyard. Also, many stores in hotel shopping malls observe abbreviated Sunday hours. Most other stores on the Island are closed, including those along Front Street in the City of Hamilton, and in the Town of St. George. However, some souvenir and gift shops are open on Sundays.
