The majority of people in Cyprus speak Greek and approximately 20% speak Turkish. English is a language commonly spoken and understood in Cyprus. However, French and German are also common at tourist places. Electricity is available at 240 volts AC, 50Hz and 13-amp square 3-pin plugs (UK-type) are used.
The Cyprus Pound (C£) is the local currency of the island. It is divided into 100 cents and notes are in denominations of C£20, 10, 5 and 1. The exchange rate is less than Pound Sterling against the local currency and around 70 cents equal a US$. Credit cards such as MasterCard, American Express, Visa and Diners Club are widely accepted. Travelers Cheques can be easily cashed in all banks. It is always better to carry traveler’s cheques in Pounds Sterling or Cyprus Pounds to avoid additional exchange rate charges.
Tap water is generally safe to drink. It is wise to eat only well-cooked vegetables, meat and fish, preferably served hot. Uncooked food such as pork, salad and mayonnaise may cause health problems. Health facilities available in Cyprus are generally of a good standard. Emergency medical treatment in the accident and emergency department is free to international tourists. International travelers, however, are advised to take out full medical insurance before departure.
