So keep yourself protected with sunscreen lotions, hats and sunglasses. It is always advisable to take some over the counter medicnes for emergency purposes. |
Health Tips
* Tap water is safe to drink as it is distilled from sea and tastes good.
* Adequate protection has to be taken against the harsh tropical sun especially during the midday. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a light beach cover-up are highly recommended. Plenty of fluids and cool baths or a body lotion containing Aloe Vera is ideal precaution against sunburn.
* Mosquitoes can be a problem in the rainy season or during the night. Anti-mosquito protection is recommended during evenings. Repellent is available at most pharmacies and supermarkets. However, Curacao has no malaria or similar tropical diseases thus no vaccinations are needed to visit.
* Beware of a tree with small green apples that is usually found on some beaches. The manchineel or manzanilla tree has poisonous fruit and its sap causes burns on exposed skin.
Medical Facilities
Standard medicines are available at the local pharmacies called Botica's. There are numerous medical centers on the island.
The St Elisabeth Hospital is a well-equipped and modern hospital. Facilities include a coronary unit and a recompression chamber.
