Currency of Bahrain

Bahrain Currency 2Dinar, commonly denoted as BHD, is the currency of Kingdom of Bahrain. 100 fils combine to form one dinar.

The currency name owes its origin to the Roman word Denarius. Bahraini Dinar, officially, became the currency of the Kingdom by replacing the existing Gulf Rupee, in 1965 equalling about 10 rupees per dinar, in 1965.

Coins

Bahrain Currency 1The Dinar coins came into picture in 1965, after the official designation of Dinar as the currency of the nation. Coins were available in the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 fils.  While the coins of the lowest denominations – 1, 5 and 10 fils – were in bronze, cupro-nickel was used for making other coins. The 1 fils coin bcame non-existent after 1966, while in 1992, the bronze coins were replaced by brass coins.

A bimetal 100 fills coin was introduced for circulation in 1992, followed by 500 fils in the year 2000.

Bank Notes

The notes of Bahraini Dinar was introduced in 1965 in various denominations - 100 fils, quarter, half, one, five and 10 dinars.

Saudi riyals are also acceptable in Bahrain, with the exception of the Saudi 500 riyal note which is only accepted in major supermarkets, airports and electronic shops.
