Route of Dubai Metro

Due to ever escalating population of Dubai, there was an urgent need for a rail system that will deliver supplementary capacity to ease growing motor traffic. Dubai Metro is a high-tech driverless, fully automated rapid transit system that will cover a network of 318 km. It will be one of the most advanced urban rail systems in the world.

The Dubai Metro will run on two lines, i.e., Red Line and Green Line. The ground work for 52.1 km Red Line was initiated in February 2006. The Red Line will initially run from Salahuddin Road, close to Al Ghurair City to the American University of Dubai through Burjuman and Sheikh Zayed Road. Later, it will progressively be extended to Jebel Ali Port in the south and the intersection of Al Nahda Road and Damascus Road through Al Qiyadah intersection in the north.

It is the single largest automatic driverless system in the world. 52 km long Red Line will have 28 stations including 24 elevated and 4 underground stations. The underground stations are at Burjuman, Union Square, Al Rigga and Port Sayed. It will cover the areas between Rashidiya and Jebel Ali station passing the American University of Dubai en route. It is expected to be completed to carry passengers by 2009. The whole 52.1 km of the Red Line is expected to take 60 minutes to travel and carry an estimated 32,000 passengers per hour.

In August 2006, work for the construction of a 17.6 km Green Line intersecting with the Red Line at two stations began. The Green Line will initially run from Al Ittihad Square close to the Municipality to Rashidiya bus station through Deira City Centre and the Airport Terminals 1 and 3.

It will progressively be extended to serve the Deira and Bur Dubai central areas and Souks up to Burjuman and Wafi shopping centers. 17.6 km long Green Line will have 14 stations.

The Green Line will link strategic locations in the city, namely, Dubai Airport and Healthcare City. The Green Line will have a total of 14 stations, 6 underground and 8 at ground level, from Al Ittihad Square to Rashidiya bus station through Deira City Centre and Dubai Airport Terminals 1 and 3. It will take around 26 minutes to complete the journey. Two interchange stations will be built at Al Ittihad Square and Burjuman with direct connections to the Red Line.

Both the lines will run underground within the city. The underground sections on the Red Line are from the intersection of Sheikh Rashid Road and Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road to just before the intersection of Salahuddin Road and Abu Bakr Al Siddique Road. On Green Line, they are from Garhoud to Oud Metha Road. Every where else, the trains will run on specially designed elevated viaducts. The design of the viaducts has been developed specifically to enhance the urban architecture along its corridor. The tracks will never cross the public highway ensuring fully safe mode segregation.
