Getting to & Getting around St.Maarten

cityMost Travellers arrive at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM)  in Dutch St. Maarten on American Airlines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, US Airways, Air France, BWIA, KLM or other international carriers. There are two airports on the island. Princess Juliana Airport is located on the Dutch side, west of Philipsburg and near Simpson Bay. St.Maarten's Queen Juliana International Airport is the second busiest airport in the Caribbean.  L'Espérance Airport, Grand Case Airport is located on the French side, north of Marigot and close to Grand Case.  American Airlines offer more frequent services to St.Maarten.

Air Caraïbes, ALM, LIAT and WINAIR offer inter-island service to and from other Caribbean destinations. Local charter flights are also available.

In addition to Juliana International Airport on the Dutch side, Espérance Airport (SFG) near Grand Case on the French side provides services for small planes and inter-island flights. A regional carrier, Air Antilles Express, offers flights between Espérance Airport, Guadeloupe and Martinique. There are departure taxes from both Juliana and Espérance.

Ferry and charter boat service between St. Martin and St. Barth and other nearby islands is available.

By Bike & Moped
Though traffic can be heavy, road speeds are generally slow, so a moped can be a good way to get around. Scooters rent for as low as EUR 25 per day and motorbikes for EUR 37 a day at Eugene Moto, on the French side.

By Car
Most people rent a car so they can more easily reach both sides of the island and interesting beaches. Rates, in general, are low for the Caribbean between $25 and $90 a day with unlimited mileage for a subcompact car.

Most roads are paved and in generally good condition. However, they can be narrow and often crowded, especially when the cruise ships are in port. Few roads are identified by name, so use a map and follow destination signs.

Taxis are available throughout the island and they are not metered. The taxis carry a government issued rate sheets covering the entire island with the prices for destinations. The rate is based on two passengers per trip. The taxi stations are located near the Princess Juliana International Airport and Wathey Square on the Dutch side.
