Getting there & around in Antigua

By Air
V.C. Bird International Airport located on the northeast corner of Antigua is the entry point for visitors arriving by air to Antigua and Barbuda. There are direct flights from North America and St.Martin. There are several flights from Europe. Scheduled and charter services are available to the neighboring islands. Flying times: New York--4 hrs.; Miami--3 hrs.; Baltimore--4 hrs.; Toronto--4 hrs.; Puerto Rico--1 hr.; London--8 hrs.; Frankfurt--9 1/4 hrs.; Paris--8 hrs.


By Sea
Cruise ships and private boats are available for travel by sea. Cruise ship ports are located at St.John’s Harbor and heritage quay in the heart of the country’s capital and it is minutes away from Antigua’s great beaches and water sports. Private boaters can enter at St.John’s harbor on the west coast. English harbor and the Crabbs Marina also serve as entry points for the private boaters. Getting Around Antigua
Taxis, buses and rental cars are readily available in Antigua for getting to know the island.  Taxis are available throughout Antigua. The fares are fixed between the airport, harbor and many hotels and destinations. Taxi drivers can serve as your tour guides as well for sightseeing trips. Tour rates can be obtained before hand through hotels.

The routes and schedules of the local buses can be obtained through the hotels. To rent a car and drive yourself at Antigua you need to have a driver’s license from your country of residence or an international driver’s license and also a permit to drive in Antigua. The rental agency will assist you in getting this license and it costs around US$20. This permit is valid for three months. Driving in Antigua is on the left side of the road.
