Getting around in Saba

The serene and tranquil Saba makes for a unique and unforgettable island vacation. Though the steep, sloping landscape and rocky cliff-side setting appeals to eyes, it somewhat makes difficult to navigate as well. However, there are a number of ways to explore this extraordinary paradise spread over 5 square miles of rugged terrain.

Public transportation is almost non-existent in Saba because of the island's sparse population and steep roads. Walking and hitchhiking are the most common mode for the locals to travel around. There are taxis, which is probably the most popular way for visitors to tour the island. They are easily available at the airport and can be called upon from your hotel.

Adventurous vacationers who want the independence of navigating the island themselves can rent a car from several local rental companies. Renting a car may be convenient for travelers who are going to make a lot of back and forth trips. This is a highly adventurous method of transportation because of Saba's steep roads and somewhat dangerous driving conditions.

There is also the option of renting a bike or moped. But, this can prove to be an extreme exercise over the island's steep terrain.

The visitors can make use of the ferries for day trips to and from the neighboring island of St. Maarten. Ferry travel is also a convenient way to reach the island after flying into St. Maarten.
