Getting around in PNG

Flying is the best and popular option for inland travel. The main carrier is Air Niugini, with several small operators serving very small airstrips. Bookings are quite reliable as most systems are computerised. While travelling by Air Niugini's domestic flights, check-in an hour in advance since booked seats are given away to passengers on waiting lists.

The network of roads around the country is very limited. Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs), essentially modified Japanese minibuses, are the widely available and cheap means of transport.

Driving is on the left side of the road and requires a valid overseas licence. The major car rental companies are Avis, Budget and Hertz and they are found in the main centers. However, the limited road system and high costs  don’t make driving a good choice.

A good form of transport is by boat. Passenger ships, freighters, charters, outboard dingies and canoes are cheap though may not be very comfortable.
