Traveling to any place in the world, getting around your destination is the big question. Mauritius as one of the tourist’s beloved destination provides good transportation services throughout the island. There are two most common ways to get around Mauritius buses and taxis. |
1: Taxis
Taxis are numerous. They are recognizable by their white registration plates with black figures. On the other hand private cars have black number plates with white figures. There are only meter Taxis in the island.
2: Bus
Mauritius boasts an excellent bus service. You may thus reach almost every part of the island through a bus. The big bus stations are in Mahébourg, Port Louis and Curepipe. After 6.00 p.m. there are only limited bus routes, so make sure to ask for the time of the last departure. Mauritian buses are generally good and can take you to (or near) just about any place on the island. There are several different operators none of which cover the entire island. Port Louis and Curepipe are the main hubs. Tickets are cheap and should be kept handy as inspectors check them frequently. Mauritian roads range from smooth to potholed and pavement-free. Driving is sketchy at best on Mauritius with speed limits often ignored headlights a rarity and weaving pedestrians all too common.
3: Helicopter sightseeing tours
Three helicopters of Air Mauritius of the model Bell-Jet Ranger are available for the transfers to airport or hotel and for outings.
