Getting around in Dominica

Taxis
Taxis and minivans have HA or H on the license plate. A sightseeing tour by taxi will cost US$18 per hour per car (4 people), but it is wise to use experienced local tour operators for sightseeing, particularly if hiking is involved. Fares on set routes are fixed by the Government. Ask at your hotel for a taxi and if you want one after 1800 you should arrange it in advance. In Roseau, Mally’s Tour & Taxi Service, 64 Cork St, T448-3360/3114, F4483689 (if planning a day trip out of town on public transport, you can sometimes arrange to be picked up and returned to Roseau by their airport taxi service), Eddie, 8 Hillsborough St, T4486003, and others.

Buses
Minibuses run from point to point. Those from Roseau to the northwest and northeast leave from between the east and west bridges near the modern market; to Trafalgar and Laudat from Valley Road, near the Police Headquarters; for the south and Petite Savane from Old Market Plaza. They are difficult to get on in the early morning unless you can get on a 0630 bus out to the villages to pick up schoolchildren and return in similar fashion. Many buses pass the hotels south of Roseau (for example Anchorage). Fares are fixed by the Government. Roseau to Salisbury is EC$3.50, to Portsmouth EC$7.50, to Woodford Hill EC$9, to Marigot EC$9, to Castle Bruce EC$7, Canefield EC$1.50, Laudat EC$3, Trafalgar EC$2.25, Soufrière/ScottsHead EC$3.
