RSSGetting around Puerto Rico is easy with a variety of options including charter planes, taxis, rental cars and publicos or metrobus. The public transportation covers all areas of the island and in particular the tourist zones.
Rental Car
Offices of all major car rental firms (Hertz, AAA, Avis) are located in Puerto Rico. A valid driving license from your country or an international driving license is sufficient. Driving is done on the right side of the road and sign posts are in Spanish. Most petrol stations are open 24 hours and can be full or self service. Petrol is measured in liters. Distance is measured in kilometers, but speed limit is in miles per hour.
Taxis
Taxis are available at the airport, hotels and major tourist points. In the tourism zones, rates are fixed and posted. Outside the zones, taxis are metered and can be hired by the hour. The minimum charge is $3.
Publicos
Public transportation between cities is conducted in privately owned buses or mini-vans, called "guaguas". The "guaguas" or "carros publicos" usually stops in each town's main plaza. Publicos are an interesting and inexpensive way to experience Puerto Rican life. You can truly enjoy the fascinating scenery of the island as you are transported from one end to the other.
Ferry
Puerto Rico is one of the ports of call for any cruise vacation. San Juan, with its eclectic mix of old and new, is an excellent stopping point for many tourists. There is also a ferry service between the cities, particularly Vieques, Culebra, Cantaño, Ponce, San Juan, Caja de Muertes and Fajardo.
