2009 Updates on road, bridge works in Dubai and metro system

Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro is one of the most innovative and sophisticated transport network that is bound to redefine the way people travel in Dubai. Work on metro network officially commenced on March 21, 2006. Once completed, Dubai Metro will have a total of 70 kms of lines, and 47 stations (including 9 underground stations), making it the longest and fully automated rail system in the world. Planning of the Dubai Metro began under the directive of Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to enhance the appeal of Dubai and ease the road congestion. To ensure that the rail network functions without any hassles, RTA is also mulling a legislation to reign in any kind of official laxity.

Extension of Metro routes

Green line - 1st phase: In 2006, contract worth Dh4.1 billion was awarded for the first phase of the Green Line, which followed the Dh 12.5 billion deal for the Red Line in June 2005. Work on the first phase of the Green Line involves the construction of a 20 kilometers metro line running from Dubai International airport through Deira and Bur Dubai to Rashidiya. The line is expected to be completed by March 2010 and will be mostly catering to the densely populated areas of Dubai like Deira etc...

Green Line - 2nd phase: Recently, a contract was awarded to a multinational firm for the extension of the second phase of Green Line. As per report, the project involves preparing designs for a 11 kilometers long extension from Al Jadaf to International City, with five stations in between. It will cross Dubai creek on the planned sixth crossing and interconnect with the Blue Line, which will run along Emirates road. It will also connect with bus and marine transport terminals.

Green Line tunnel

Recently, work on second underground tunnel beneath the Dubai Creek was completed to link the metro system. Using a 1,000-tonne, 9.56-metre-tall underground boring machine called Al Bugeisha, RTA has safely carved out a 2.5-kilometre passage under the Dubai Creek as part of the 7.6-kilometre portion of the Green Line tunnel. The Green Line tunnel runs from the Al Ras area in Deira, under the Creek and Bur Dubai, to the BurJuman Centre to link with the Red Line. Both lines are expected to carry 23,000 passengers per hour for 19 hours a day, seven days a week.

Red Line tunnel

The first tunnel, Red Line passage, under the Dubai Creek was completed in August 2007. It links Union Square in Deira with BurJuman station. The underwater portion of the first tunnel is 1.5 kms long. First tunnel must have been constructed at least 30 metres below the creek. The boring machine was used to dig through the sand, rock and silt and install semi-circular concrete rings with special gaskets to seal out water. Curved concrete rings have been locked together to form the interior wall of the underground tunnel that will allow the new five-carriage metro trains to pass through. A guard rail to prevent head-on collisions and annexes in the tunnel walls is a salient feature of this passage.

Purple Line

  • Design is complete pending approval
  • The Purple Line is the fourth line of the Dubai Metro project and will provide an express means of transport and directly link Dubai International Airport and Jebel Ali Airport
  • The line will be automatically operated and include eight passenger stations
  • Project expected to finish by Q4 of 2013

Current Status

  • Project still under construction
  • The Red Line scheduled to open by September 2009
  • Green Line to finish by March 2010
  • The other two lines (Purple & Blue) are still in their infancy
  • Full test run of the metro system to take place in August
  • Swift access walkway from Dubai Metro to Mall of the Emirates to open this September
