Travelling to a foreign country is always a nice experience. So, to avoid troubles be sure to check a few things advance such as currency, valid passport and health insurance. Austria is a signatory to the 1995 Schengen Agreement.
Visa not required by all nationals for the following lengths of visit
(a) Nationals of EU countries for an unlimited period, provided passport is valid;
(b) Nationals of Australia, Canada and USA for the purposes of business or tourism for stays of up to three months. For stays longer than three months an entry permit must be applied for which is valid for up to six months.
(c) Holders of the following British passports do need a visa: British subject (without right of abode in the UK); British Dependent Territories; British Overseas Citizens; British Protected Persons.
Entry requirements
South African nationals require a passport and a Schengen visa for travel to Austria. New Zealanders require a passport but a visa is not needed for a stay of up to three months. Irish nationals require a passport but no visa is needed for travel to Austria.
Travelling with Children
Single parents or other adults travelling alone with children should be aware that Austria requires documentary evidence of parental responsibility (e.g. a consent letter) before allowing lone parents to enter the country or, in some cases, before permitting the children to leave the country. Carrying such a letter of consent is a precautionary measure recommended by the UK and Austrian authorities. It does not, however, automatically guarantee the problem-free movement of minors who are not travelling with the person legally exercising parental care over them.
• You will not need a visa to visit Austria for a maximum of 90 days, if all of the following three criteria apply:
• A family member of an EU/EEA national
• And if you hold a British “Residence Card of a Family Member of an EEA National” according to EU Directive 2004/38/EC with a validity of 5 years.
All holders of travel documents and certificates of Identity (CID) as well as the holders of the following British Passports do require a visa:
* British Dependent Territories
* British Overseas Citizens
* British Protected Persons
You can apply for a visa from any country and it will be issued for a maximum of six months. The responsible body is the Austrian representation: the appropriate Austrian consulate of the Austrian Embassy. There you will find out what documentation is required for the issue of a visa. Great importance is attached to the completeness of your application.An incompletely filled out application can lead to the refusal of your visa request.It is not possible to extend the visa in Austria.
Note: The borderless region known as the Schengen area includes the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. All these countries issue a standard Schengen visa that has a multiple entry option that allows the holder to travel freely within the borders of all.
