Currency
The official currency is the New Zealand dollar. A US$ is around 2 New Zealand dollars. There are still some Cook Islands coins available of which the 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c resemble the New Zealand and Australian coins in terms of size and shape that are not valid currency but nice souvenirs. Old Cook Islands coins of $1, $2 and $5 are still in use. The New Zealand denominations are 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2 coins and $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 notes.
Visa Information
All entering the Cook Islands require a valid passport valid for the duration of stay.
Visas are not required by visitors for a stay of up to 31 days as they are issued on arrival. Confirmed onward/return tickets and documentation, accommodation arrangements and proof of adequate finances for duration of stay are required. All nationals arriving in the Cook Islands for business purposes require a visa unless the visit is under 30 days in duration and on behalf of a firm or person whose principal place of business is outside the Cook Islands; all transactions must be on behalf of that firm or person. Extension permits are usually granted for visitors wanting to stay over 31 days. Applications can be made on arrival at the Immigration Department. Extensions are granted for a fee on a monthly basis, up to five additional months only. For up to three months the fee is around NZ$70.00 (15 years and older), up to five months it is around NZ$120.00 (15 years and older). Children under 15 are exempt from charges but must report to Immigration for official paperwork to be completed. People who wish to stay longer than six months must apply for a visa from their home country,
