Seafood plays an important role in the traditional dishes of the Turk & Caicos Islands. The most popular dishes are those feature conch such as conch Creole, Curried Conch, Conch Fritters, Conch Chowder, Cracked Conch and Dried Conch. Also popular among seafood is lobster, which is served in all restaurants and prepared according to a person’s specifications.Grits, also known as Hominy, is cooked with peas or dried conch with fish, chicken and ground vegetables added to the meal. Peas and rice are the main staples of the island and feature in about 90 percent of the local cuisine. Hominy is also flavored with bits of salt beef and pig tail. The weekend speciality is boiled fish served with Johnnycake.
When visiting the islands, no trip is complete without a taste of rum punch. The ingredients include Lucayan rum, coconut rum, orange juice, pineapple juice and sirop de grenadine, making it a zesty cocktail.
