The Culture of Anguilla

Anguilla has a rich heritage of strong culture. The history of Anguilla is embodied in the island's culture and heritage. From the ancient Amerindian settlements and European colonization to its almost recent 1967 Revolution, all these and other events are woven into the tapestry of Anguilla's life and have profound presence in the culture of Anguilla, passed on with pride from generation to generation.

 


Anguilla has a West Indian Culture which is a blend of British and African culture. The majority is Christian in the island with churches for every two square miles. Among the English holidays the Queen’s Birthday, Whit Monday, Easter Monday, and others are celebrated. Being an English speaking Island, Anguillans maintain equilibrium of all its historic influences that makes the island a truly individual nation.

Usually the holidays and festivals in Anguilla are count on historical events but the most magnificent parade of culture can be admired during the Summer Festival which begins from Monday, August at 5 am with J'Ouvert Mornin,' a daybreak jam through the streets to celebrate emancipation. This is Anguilla's major holidays and the island is filled with joy, celebration and enjoyment during this festival. The Anguilla community is also very peaceful and joyous.
