Religion in Singapore

Singapore is one of the finest examples of religious tolerance and secularism. Even in modern times, religion is an integral part of daily life in the island as some of popular places to visit in Singapore are religious in nature.

According to 2000 census reports, the resident population of Singapore was followers of Buddhism at 42.5% followed by Christianity at 14.6%. Followers of Islam comprise 13.9% while Taoism was followed by 8.5% of the total population. Hindus have small yet significant population of 4% with followers of other religions comprises 1.6%. A noteworthy 14.8% of the population is not followers of any religion or are atheists.  

The co-existence of variety of religions is due to the diversity in ethnicity of the people of Singapore. The citizens and residents of Singapore are mainly from China, Malaysia and India and also from Europe. The Chinese are predominantly followers of Buddhism and Taoism. Malays are mostly Muslims and Indians are mostly Hindus but with substantial numbers of Muslims and Sikhs from the Indian ethnic groups.

Although there is immense religious harmony in Singapore, yet the distinct areas of these ethnic races allotted to them by Sir Stamford Raffles exist even today. Chinatown is a home to the Chinese population, Little India along Serangoon Road is abode of the Indians and Arabs lives mostly at Arab Street.

Each racial group has its own distinctive religious practices and colorful festivals that bring special significance all year round. Although the festivals are special to certain races, it is nonetheless enjoyed by all.
