The Principality of Liechtenstein is known to have special leaning towards good music. The country has produced an internationally renowned composer, Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901), who was the mentor of Humperdinck and a friend of Franz Liszt.
Among the most popular music festival in Liechtenstein are the Guitar Days and Schubertiade. The Guitar Days is an annual guitar competition festival, which has become quite rage among tourists as well. Schubertiade is held in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg. The rock and metal music festival, Wavejam Openair, is organized annually in Balzers.
There are more than 4000 music associations in Liechtenstein including the Liechtenstein Musical Company and the International Josef Gabriel Rheinberger Society. The Liechtenstein School of Music is the most significant institution in the country that imparts musical education. The institution is headquartered in Vaduz, the city where Josef Rheinberger was born. The Liechtenstein School of Music also co-operates with public schools in providing music education for younger students.
15th International Liechtenstein Guitar Festival Ligita
It is an internationally acclaimed guitar competition. The guests list of this year includes Alvaro Pierri, Manuel Barrueco, Carlo Domeniconi, Dusan Bogdanovic, Hopkinson Smith, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Gitarrenduo Clormann-Trechslin, Mariano Martin y su grupo flamenco, Latif Chaarani, Dieter Kreidler, Michael Buchrainer, Stefan Hackl, Walter Feybli and the Altmühldorfer Musikanten.
