Language of Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is the fourth smallest country in Europe. The citizens of Liechtenstein are referred to as the Liechtensteiners.

The population of Liechtenstein is primarily ethnic Alemannic. The resident population of the principality is approximately 1/3rd foreign-born, primarily German speakers from the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria, the Swiss Confederation, other (Latin) Swiss, Italians and Turks. The foreign-born people make up 2/3rd of the country's workforce.

The official language of Liechtenstein is German. The local German dialect is Alemannic, which is at times mistaken as a language. It belongs to a highly divergent group including Swiss German, Alsatian, and some Germans living in Baden-Württemberg and Bavarian Swabia and Austrians living in Vorarlberg. 86% of the country is "ethnic Alemannic" and are speakers of the language. The Highest Alemannic is spoken in the southern region of the country while High Alemannic is common in the rest of the country. It can be difficult to achieve mutual intelligibility between Alemannic and High German, especially with the Highest Alemannic varity.

Other languages are also spoken by the foreign-born population, which makes up about 14% of the country. The other languages spoken in Liechtenstein are Italian, English and Turkish.
