Culture of Maldives

Maldives is a charming country surrounded by turquoise water all around it. The origin of the culture of Maldives is shrouded with mystery. The vibrant culture of Maldives is amalgamation of diverse communities that have come and made this island their home from time to time.

Islam is the national religion of the country. Although, several languages are spoken in Maldives, the most common one is Divehi. It is very similar to languages from Sri Lanka, South East Asia and North India containing several Arabic, Hindi and English words. The people of Maldives follow all the festivals and events of the Islamic calendar, most popular being Ramadan and Kuda Eid.


Being an island, the seafood is the specialty in Maldives. The mouthwatering recipes of fishes and other seafood are prepared using local ingredients and spices. Garudhiya or the Tuna Soup, Spicy Curry and Rice are the staple diet of most of the people.


The commonly eaten fishes are Trevallies, Barracuda and Tuna served with various curries. The food here can taste from spicy and hot to mild and sweet. The cuisine of Maldives is influenced by the cooking style of India and Sri Lanka but with distinct flavor of its own. Many western dishes like pasta are now part of the local cuisine but it is modified to give a regional taste. Chicken and other meats are normally prepared on celebrations and special occasions. The tropical fruits and dessert complete the list of a typical Maldives menu. 


The people of Maldives observe certain ceremonies and celebrate some cultural event in their own unique way. Bodumaloodhu, naming a newborn child or circumcision of male child are some of them which are initiated with a prayer and followed by a festive meal. The people enjoy themselves with traditional dance and music performances like Bodu beru (big drum) performance, in which females and males participate; Bandiyaa, which is performed by women and Thaara.
