Culture of Ireland

The culture of Ireland is a result of thousands of years of inhabitation since the first man arrived in Ireland. The Irish culture is highly influenced from other cultures that had invaded Ireland in the past. The Vikings and Normans brought their own culture and traditions. However, many of them were swept over by the existing Irish culture and they became ‘more Irish than the Irish’.

Although several non-Irish people came to Ireland and fell in love yet many traditions and beliefs known today as Irish had been introduced in Ireland from different places such as Britain. In Ireland, the Irish traditions are the basics to the Irish culture and way of life that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Today Irish traditions are commonly known around the globe with more people taking an interest in Irish traditions or even their own Irish heritage. Irish people are considered very superstitious and have many superstitions associated with weddings. The belief in fairy tales is also a part of Irish culture. For Irish people, it is important to share their culture and traditions with others in order to keep alive what has survived throughout hundreds of years of Irish history.

Many of the Irish traditions have become a part of life for Irish people that they are followed every day without giving it a thought. The lifestyle becomes part of our culture and our culture becomes part of our lifestyle. Many customs and traditions, like names, recipes, music, holiday or celebrations are handed down from generation to generation thus making it difficult to find its origin. Some traditions originated out of climatic, social or economic conditions over a long period in history.

The term “Fighting Irish” had its origin from the past historic events that took place during invasions and clan battles in Ireland. A fierce Irish warrior was the one who never feared death and was common in Ireland. The Celts and Vikings had influenced the Irish battle skills, spirituality and strength that eventually lead to successful determined warriors confusing many invading forces. The Romans had almost given up the plan of invading Ireland and settling there as they found it as too much trouble.
