London, sprawling over an area of 1579 km sq is the capital of United Kingdom. It is a leading global city with the largest metropolitan area in the UK. It serves as a centre of arts, entertainment, commerce, education, fashion, tourism, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development. These have made London world's largest financial centre along with New York. With its highest GDP in Europe, it is also a home to many European companies. Being the most visited city in the world, London boasts of five international airports and London Heathrow is the busiest airport in the world. With its well-known universities, it attracts many students from the neighboring European nations.
Situated on the River Thames, in the southeast of England, London is a vast, vibrant and multicultural city. Many of the tributaries of Thames River flows underground. London is considered as the driest capital city among other European cities. January is the coolest month, while July is the warmest. Over the years, London has expanded with the excellent expressways and structures such as London Underground or ‘Tube'.
The Houses of Parliament lies in the west of London. In the expanse between the Houses of Parliament and London, we can find most of the tourist attractions with many entertainment areas, such as Knightsbridge and Soho. But the charm and vivacity of London extends far beyond this area. The out of the city Residential areas, such as leafy Richmond (southwest) or Hampstead (north), trendy Hoxton (east) or Notting Hill (west) have their own charm and identity. London has more parks and green areas than any other city of a similar size in the world. But there are high levels of air pollution across London - particularly in Inner London and at Heathrow airport.
The people in London are highly fashionable and we can see the life-style here at its best. They have the great love for theatre, opera, films, music, sports, and arts. Most of the London films are premiered at Leicester Square. It is also a hub of western classical music. The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Elton John, are famous all over the world for their magnificent contribution in the field of music.
London has been rightly called a ‘world in one city’ and being a multicultural city, people love this city and the tourists come here to experience world-class art galleries and theaters, buzzing nightlife, film, music, culinary and fashion scenes.
The tourist can enjoy balmy days during the summer season on the café tables sprouting across the
pavements. Thought the winter is harsh in London, we can find comfort in the cozy pubs. To visit London, spring and the autumn seasons are perhaps the most suitable when we can see London illuminated in the sunny days.
