England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island together makes up the UK, which is officially called United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Since it is a mix of countries, it is rich in culture and tradition.
Traditional cuisines
Being a tea-drinking nation, tea makes the most preferred drink. Tea is usually brewed in a China pot. British likes their tea to be strong with a lot of milk. Fish and chips is the national food of Britain. The fish is usually deep fried with a mix of floor and served with chips.
Valentines day
Valentines Day is celebrated in Britain with full fervor. People pen a verse in the newspapers as a practice. People exchange cards and gifts with their loved ones and children sing romantic songs. In turn the kids will be awarded some sweets or gifts. There is a strange belief in Britain that the first man an unmarried girl meets on Valentines’s day will be her future husband.
British Superstitions
Britisher’s consider a clover plant with four leaves as lucky. They also see horses as a symbol of luck. Other symbols of luck are catching a falling leaf and putting money in new clothes. On the contrary walking under a ladder , breaking a mirror, spilling salt, keeping new shoes on a table are signs of bad omen.
Traditional dance
Morris dancing is one of the traditional dances of the English, which is seen throughout the month of May, Whitsun and Christmas. It is performed by a group of men or women. The dancers paint their faces black, this may have lead to people comparing them with Moors and thus the origin of the name Morris dancing. An accordion player accompanies the dancers and it is usually a noisy affair with bands and drums. The costume of the dancers depends on the country where they are performing.
British Music
Continental developments have played a major influence on British Music. All the four countries of the UK have its own music culture. But by the 20th century folk, jazz and rock music.
