A small yet expanding section included within this area is the processing of dairy products. With proper investment and the introduction of adequate technology, the processing of dairy products can become a large net income earner within the country.
Presently, the poultry industry represents the largest production within the livestock category and the possibility for future exportation is excellent.
| Poultry Farming & Processing |
Poultry has a comparative
advantage over other meats in the domestic market because it is by far the most
economical source of meat; the source is consistent, reliable and of good quality.
These factors have contributed to the establishment of poultry as the "First
Choice" meat for most Belizeans. The size of the domestic market for the
industry as a whole (broiler/layer) exceeds US$23 million. Quality Poultry Products,
one of the larger commercial producers of poultry in Belize, held 51% of the
market share in 2001.
Poultry processing is limited to the transformation of live birds into dress-weight
whole birds and into poultry parts (legs, leg quarters and breasts). Most of
the commercial production of poultry is by the farmers of Spanish Lookout, Shipyard
and Blue Creek. Many small farmers are also involved in subsistence production.
Belize has the potential
to be competitive in the regional markets due to its high production potential
of feed sources which constitute 70% of the total costs of production.
