Nightlife in Jamaica

For most vacationers, nightlife is found in the resorts, most which feature nightly shows that range from reggae performers and Elvis impersonators to special nights with fire eaters and limbo dancers. For starters, there's reggae, popularized by the late Bob Marley and the Wailers and performed today by son Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Tosh (the late Peter Tosh's son), Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff, and many others.

If your experience of Caribbean music has been limited to steel drums and Harry Belafonte, then the political, racial, and religious messages of reggae may set you on your ear; listen closely and you just might hear the heartbeat of the people. Dancehall is another island favorite, as is soca. The discos and nightclubs in Kingston, Port Antonio, Negril and other towns of Jamaica promise exciting musical evenings.

About Montego Bay:

Sunset in Jamaica is symbolic, not so much of the end of the day, but the beginning of the throbbing tropical night. Sunset watching is a required pursuit; there remains only to choose the spot. A popular Jamaica nightlife excursion is An Evening on the Great River. This night would begin with a pick-up at your hotel. The evening includes a boat ride up the torch-lit river, an open bar, Jamaican dinner, reggae band, and a native floor show with limbo dancers. It is a true Jamaica nightlife experience. Montego Bay is Jamaica's second city in size and importance, but it is the island's tourism capital

About Negril:

To introduce Negril, we have to quote Richard Hershman, the original owner of Rick's Cafe: "Your body has suddenly arrived where your mind has always been". Some of the best reggae bands in Jamaica, often from Kingston and often Bob Marley wannabes, show up in Negril. Alfred's and Risky Business are both major venues for reggae performances. All establishments listed below are located on Norman Manley Boulevard unless otherwise noted.

About Kingston:

The nightlife is the most cosmopolitan and colorful on the island, with everything from jazz and lively theater to reggae concerts performed with originality and aplomb. The city's yearly calendar is repete with festivals and sporting and other events. There are top-notch hotels, and good restaurants for all tastes. And a wealth of nearby venues for recreation and exploration beckon travelers to explore farther afield.
