Live Music in Anguilla

Anguilla is a music loving country. The island throbs with its traditional music particularly during the night times, as a lot of live performances take place on different parts of the island. Here is a list of some of the most vibrant spots to find the best musicians with styles of music in Anguilla;

 

 


1: Bankie Banx and Moonsplash

Bankie's style of music starts from folk guitar, through rhythm and blues, reggae, jazz and a combination of much more. Bankie plays at The Dune Preserve in Rendezvous Bay on most weekends. Moonsplash, a celebration of music is an annual event that takes place on a moonlit weekend in March. The music and fun goes on all night the whole weekend.

 

2: Dumpa

Dumpa whose real name is Michael Martin, is Anguilla's best known steel drum player who as well as performing himself has taught many young people on the island. He performs at Johnno's on a Wednesday and at Scilly Cay on Friday lunch time, Mariners Hotel on a Friday evening as well as several other hotels. His group "Dumpa and the Anvibes" which consists of an electric guitar, a drum and three vocalists are usually with him on these occasions.

 

3: The Mayoumba Folkloric Group

The Mayoumba Folkloric Group performs traditional songs of Anguilla and the Caribbean in local costumes. They can be seen at La Sirena Hotel on Thursday evenings. The group has been established for many years and has performed in many of the islands in the Caribbean. The performance is very varied and includes drama and music. They have a wide range of traditional instruments such as the maracas, banjo, string bass, cow bells, triangle as well as guitars.


4: Calypso

The calypso is popular in Anguilla now, especially at Carnival time when several musicians compete for the Calypso King title.

 

5: Spraka

Spraka is another of Anguilla's talented musicians who is best known as a singer and guitarist but also composes many of his own songs. He usually sings at Malliouhana Hotel on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at Scilly Cay on Wednesday lunch time.

 

6: Sleepy and the All Stars

Sleepy and the All Stars is a popular band that started in 1983. They play the traditional Anguilla music using a bath pan bass, banjo and shack shack, along with guitars and saxophone. Their music is lively, very popular and they have a wide repertoire.
