Hakupu Fiafia Night

The Hakupu Fiafia Night is hosted by a family in Hakupu village, and held weekly on Wednesdays. The night features a selection of delicious Niuean cooked 'umu', a gastronomic feast, and warm welcome by the Hakupu Women and children.

A trip to Hakupu starts with a tour at the village green with a village guide who gives you an insight into the Hakupu peoples’ customs and traditions, which have been passed on for many generations. The tour also includes a visit to a nearby 'umu' pit where you can learn where and how the food is prepared beforehand similar to the preparation in the New Zealand maori 'hangi' feast.

The feast or 'kai' with organic grown vegetables is held at the former Hakupu Primary School premises at Tuatea. Coconut crabs or 'uga' are a popular delicacy during the feast.

Handcrafts are also made available on display to purchase made by the Hakupu Womens ranging from hats, fruit bowls, wall displays, fans, necklaces and placemats.

Before the night is over around 8.00pm the Hakupu Women and children put on a great performance of Niuean songs and dances and will invite you to partake in the dancing as well.
