Pakistan has a really admirable music background. Pakistani music is a coagulation of elements ranging from music from various parts of South Asia, Central Asia, Turkey, Persia, western and modern music. Film music is equally popular in Pakistan. Punjab and Lahore made significant contribution to Indian music in the earlier days.
Film Music
Noor Jehan’s nightingale voice has dominated the Pakistani film industry for a long time. The number
songs she has recorded so far is stil the highest in the industry. It will not be much known to the people that Mohamad Rafi, the person with an eternal voice, who continues to lure music lovers through his powerful voice in bollywood made his debut with Noor Jahan.
Pakistan holds a lot of legacy in Bollywood Music, Lata Mangeshkar, the owner of a magical and mystical voice was instruduced to the film field by Ghulam Haidar, a native of Lahore.
Some of the noted names of the 1960’s are G.A. Chishti, Master Abdullah, Master Inayat Hussain and Firoze Nizami.
Though Indian films were banned in Pakistan after the partition, Bollywood continued to spell its cast on Pakistanis through the radio.
Ghazals & Sufi music
Ghazal, a prominent form of Urdu poetry influenced many languages. It spread to Southasia in the 12th century. Sufi is a structured version of kafi, qawwali, kafi and various regional genres. Qawwali is said to be originated in the 13th century. Qawwali songs were most popular in the Lollywood and Bollywood films of 60s and 70s.
Numerous artists excelled in kafi singing, which was later polished into folk structure and semi-classical form. Some of the popular names in Qawwali singing are Baha-ud-din, Fateh Ali Khan, Mubarak Ali Khan and Munshi Raziuddin.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is a prominent name Pakistani music. Primarily a singer of Qawwali, he carried
out numerous fusion experiments with music. He died at the zenith of his career at the age of 51. In 1997, his album Intoxicated Spirit was nominated for a Grammy award. He was awarded "Legends" award at the UK Asian Music Awards in 2005.
