Leisure activities in Hungary

Hiking

Hungary is a hiker’s paradise. Therefore you can bike through the 5 national parks and nearly 1000 protected areas. Abound in unique natural qualities, with extant moors, bogs, flood-plains, forests, leas and grass-lands preserving the original flora and fauna are amazing and give spectators a lovely impression. You can head for the mountains in the north and northwest of the country. The Börzsöny, Mátra and Pilis ranges not far to the north of Budapest are popular regions for both easy and strenuous hiking. The Mátra Mountains contain Hungary's highest peak, Kékeseto (1015m/3329ft), which is suitable for hikes and walks. But less strenuous walking is possible around Lake Balaton and in the hills in the south of the country. Most of these areas are open to the public.


Cycling

Cycling, as an active tourism is catching up fast in Hungary as in other parts of Europe. There are various routes recommended for cycling. The length of bicycle paths in Budapest is longer than 100 km.


The various bicycle paths of the country extend from city areas of Budapest to the far flung rural countryside. Various rental agencies offer bicycles on rent but transportation of your own bicycles from different countries is also possible on different vehicles by trains, HÉV suburban railways, and ships.

Bird Watching

Hungary's many wetlands, rivers and lakes attract large numbers of water birds. This is why, a large number of tourist throng to this part of Europe for bird watching. The best place for bird watching is Hortobágy National Park in the Great Plain to the east of the country, where different types of storks, warblers, eagles and herons can be seen. A guide is required for visits to some parts of the park, where motor vehicles are not permitted.
