Historic castles, picturesque valleys, snow-covered alpines of Austria make for a perfect venue for a dream wedding. The legal arrangement of Austria makes its possible for the citizens of other nations to get married in Austria.
Legality of Marriage
It is possible to legally get married in Austria. However, the marriage will be valid only if it is performed at a Standesamt, the registry of births, deaths and marriages and by an official of the registry in the presence of two witnesses.
Residency requirements
There are no minimum residency requirements to get married in Austria. However, once the marriage application has been filed, there is usually a waiting period of 2 to 6 weeks until you will be given a confirmed date of marriage. You can file your marriage application up to a maximum of 6 months prior to your wedding date.
Marriage application
If either of you is an Austrian citizen or resides in Austria (regardless of citizenship), your marriage application must be filed at the Standesamt that pertains to your residence. If neither of you are Austrian nor reside in Austria, your marriage application must be filed at the main registrar's office in Vienna. Both the persons must be present when filing for the marriage. In some circumstances, the Registrar might waiver this requirement if neither of you reside in Austria.
