Getting married in Costa Rica is a very romantic idea as it makes your wedding a memorable event. Getting married in Costa Rica is very easy and simple, as it does not involve any cumbersome process such as blood tests, minimum stay and notarized certificates. All weddings require the presence of a lawyer, who files all the legal documents with the Costa Rican Civil Registry as well as with the embassy of the couple. This process is necessary so that the marriage is legal and recognized internationally. |
List of requirements for civil marriage in Costa Rica:
- Costa Rica requires a valid passport for foreigners who want to marry.
- A visa is a migratory requisite and is not needed for marriage purposes.
- A Birth Certificate is not required since a sworn statement attesting to your date and place of birth covers necessary requirement.
- No certifications or authentications are necessary, since the sworn statement covers items that need to be authenticated or notarized.
- Two witnesses are required for the wedding. The family up to the third degree cannot be the witnesses. Friends are perfect to fulfill the duty of a witness.
- There is no stipulated period of stay in Costa Rica for a valid marriage.
- Original or copies of decrees of law are not required since the sworn statement will attest to when, where and from whom you are divorced. Send the date, place, name of court that decreed the divorce and full name of ex-spouse, so that it can be included it in the sworn statement.
- The divorced bride have to wait for 300 days between the date of the divorce decree and the date of the upcoming marriage. If this is not possible, the bride must undergo two pregnancy tests by two different doctors and certify the negative results. This certification have to be translated by an official translator and run through the required chain of signatures ending in the Secretary of State (or equivalent, depending on the country) and the Costa Rican Consulate. This must be presented to the officiating notary prior to the ceremony.

The Certificate of Marriage takes three months to process. For an additional fee, the certificate can be had in 10-12 business days. The certificate is translated and authenticated by the Consulate of the country of residence of the couple and send via Fed Ex. Once the certificate is received, it must be registered in the city of residence of the couple.
The documents required one month prior to getting married in Costa Rica:
- Name
- Profession
- Passport Numbers
- Foreign Address
- Birth Date
- Place of Birth
- Nationality
- Father's full name
- Mother's full maiden name
- Parent's address
- Original copy of passport
- Official copy of original divorce certified or notarized at Costa Rica's Consulate or Embassy. For women (if applicable), 300 days must have transpired from the official date of the divorce to be able to become married in Costa Rica. In addition, the name of the former husband is required.
