Lovo Feast Lovo feast is one of the most lavish food festivals of Fiji. The Fijians have a delicious way of preparing their food. |
They wrap chicken, seafood, meats, potatoes, bananas and other vegetation in silver foil and encase it in whole palm leaves and place them in an underground oven covered entirely with sand or dirt. The food cooks in its own juices and retains all its delicious flavour. The preparation of food in a lovo oven and unwrapping of the leaves for the steaming, aromatic food is a marvelous experience. Most resorts hold lovo feasts at least once a week and on special occasions like holidays or weddings.
Kava Ceremony
This ceremony marks the preparation of the traditional drink of Fiji. Made from ground powdered roots, Kava is Fiji’s national drink. It looks like muddy water with a slight peppery flavour and has an acquired taste.
Kava is prepared by the locals in a special wooden kava bowl and then smaller bowls are passed around in a circle. When accepting kava, you clap once before drinking and then three times after. Your tongue will go numb and you’ll feel very mellow as the bowl keeps rotating in your direction. You might be invited to join a kava ceremony during a village visit, or participate in one at your resort, which is a social pastime and a cultural tradition.
Fijian Wedding Ceremony
Fijian weddings are unique and one of its kind in entire pacific. Beautiful florals, leis, headpieces and decoration of the wedding raft with red hibiscus mark this unique occasion. On the sunset, the bride is carried onto the raft, which sails down to the chapel along with bamboo canopy adorned with flowers.
All guests wear frangipani leis and are handed rice to throw at the happy couple when the ceremony is over.
